What we do

How the Treviso Tissue Bank Foundation of Veneto operates

The Treviso Tissue Bank Foundation – TTBF – is a non-profit healthcare organisation tasked with procuring, processing, preserving, validating and distributing original human tissue for clinical use, and with certifying the suitability and safety of the organs and tissues made available (in accordance with Italian Legislative Decree 191 of 6/11/2007).

Set up by the Veneto Regional Authorities with resolution no. 3948/2000,  TTBF is specialised in the procurement of heart tissues, valve segments, osteo-tendinous (bone and tendons) and amniotic membrane. It operates in the healthcare units of Italy’s Triveneto and Marche regions, distributing these homologous tissues throughout Italy and beyond.

The Treviso Tissue Bank Foundation – TTBF:

  • Works with hospitals to ensure accurate identification of potential donors, facilitating the work of medical and nursing staff in the selection and organisation of the tissue donation process;

  • Carries out tissue harvesting in compliance with strict protocols in the operating theatres of the hospitals belonging to the system. The harvesting team is made up of specialist medical and nursing personnel;

  • Processes and assesses all donated tissues in dedicated laboratories certified for sterility and safety in compliance with national regulation;

  • Ensures low-temperature preservation of the donated tissues using freezing and cryopreservation techniques. Harvested material may also undergo freeze-drying and demineralisation;

  • Distributes homologous tissues ready for transplantation;

  • Trains healthcare personnel in correct potential donor selection procedures;

  • Works alongside healthcare personnel to develop clinical projects.

Procurement and Donations

The Donation and Procurement area is in charge of managing cadaveric and living donor donations, from reporting to final assessment of eligibility.

Tissue Harvesting

The referral of each potential donor is made by the COT (Hospital Transplant Coordination Teams) after consulting the national computer system to certify any expression of will declared during life.

Treatment and Storage

Fabrics at all stages are processed in contamination- and climate-controlled environments and handled by trained personnel.

Distribution

Tissues are sent in consultation with surgeons, for both elective and emergency surgeries, in certified athermic containers that guarantee temperature maintenance at +2°C/+8°C or at-80°C with strict temperature control, depending on the mode of dispatch.

Training / Communication

Treviso Tissue Bank Foundation Onlus collaborates with various specialists to disseminate the results obtained and promote awareness of the possible clinical uses of homologous tissues.
